Title: The Achieving of Semiotic Systems in order to Representing or Telling Time from 3 to 10 Years Old Children
Abstract : Time is a social and cultural construction mediated by different external semiotic tools (calendars, timetables, etc.). This research aims at studying how children were grasping upon external representational systems to solving a duration communicative problem - a temporal riddle. Seventy-eight children (26 children from 3-4 years old, 26 children from 7-8 years old and 26 children from 10-11 years old) were allocated into a same gender dyad. In each dyad, a child was invited to use notations in order to make her/his partner guessed duration clues. The main results revealed that 3-4 years old children were not able to use graphical notations as tools to communicate last information, whereas7-8 years old children used graphical notations supported by oral language to product the support on which their partner rely to solve the duration riddle. Specifically, the 10-11 years old children used graphical notations as psychological tools both to represent and communicate their partner temporal information. These results are discussed from a sociocultural perspective.

Title: Utililizing Notations for Memorizing and Communicating the Construction of an Object: A Developmental Trend in 6 to 11 Years Old Children
Abstract : This study analysed the ability of children to use notational systems to represent the construction process of an object, a deer skechting by building blocks, within two specific contexts: transmission and memorisation of information. Four groups of children (36 per group), aged from 6 to 11 years old, were asked to devise a way to (a) help children in another school to construct the same object or (b) find a way to remember the construction a few days later. The spontaneity of the notations and their usefulness increased with age. Whereas the children used only drawing, which was more suited to the figurative nature of the object, as opposed to a linguistic representation. The context of production had an effect on the spontaneity of productions in 11 years old children but had little effect on their quality.

Title: From Action to Writing: The Production of Instructions Comparing by 8 to 12 Years Old Children
Abstract : The present research aims at analyzing the way children communicate a simple procedure to their pairs with a notational representation. Whereas the productions of 8 to 12 years old Spanish, Greek and French children were comparing by several criteria of which those were compared much than those of adults. Our results show the difficulty to produce a complete procedural text. Various difficulties were observed related to the need to segment the procedure in unit components taking the sequence into account and to the need to determine the mode of notation adapted to the types of information to transmit. Results for children of the three countries are rather close. This reveals the existence of developmental constraints related to the cognitive treatments involved in the communication of instructions.

Title: Communicate from the Ascribing of a Path to Each Other: Production of Notations between 9 and 11 Years Depending on the Social Context of the Task
Abstract : Nine to 11 years old students (from the first year of primary school and the second one) were asked to listen a recorded text in order to construct a spatial representation (an itinerary for going to school) and to communicate it with each other one. We studied their capacity to produce spontaneously written notations: paper and pencils were available on the table, but no suggestion was made to mark anything down. Firstly, the students were only required to listen to the text once. After a second reading, they were told they were free to do whatever they wanted in order to help each other, given the following situations: a) to give directions to an unknown child who doesn’t know a path; b) to direct a child to the school but children were informed that they would actually meet this child in two days’ time. Although the notations became more functional with age, the context of communication appeared to be a more important factor for spontaneous use of written notations, especially with the younger children: When they knew that they would meet a social partner in the near future, they made notations more frequently. These results supported the premise that providing authentic contexts for learning helped students to better understanding pragmatic and cognitive functions of written tasks.

Title: Production and Evaluation of Notations by Children from 8 to 11 Years Old: Incidence of Achievement from Systems of Writing
Abstract : The production and the evaluation of notations by children from 8 to 11 years old were studied in a context of transmission of a process of construction of an object. Children were asked to discover how to help children from another school to construct an object formed of building blocks in the absence of the model. Are examined: (a) the spontaneity, the nature of the notations (graphic, alphabetical, code - colour, etc.), their feature (reproduction of the available model or not) and their relevance with regard to the addressee; (b) judgments carried by the children on a set of notations of various levels of feature which is proposed to them. Besides, the indicators of the use of the notations by the children are put in connection with their level of achievement of the systems of writing (level in reading, production of a text and digital notations). Results revealed that (a) the number of spontaneous notations increased and are more functional with age (production and evaluation); (b) the quality of notations varied according to the children’s skills in writing and numeric notations.

Title: Writing in Order to Memorize: Learning or Development?
Abstract : Young children do not think writing for information that they are likely to forget whereas they are able to do it on demand. Is this a developmental delay or a consequence of the way children learn to write? To assess this question, a pedagogical device was developed and proposed to help 5, 6 and 7 years old pupils to use writing at French schools. Educational interactions arising from implementing this device are analyzed in the light of their impact, rated with a test administered before and after the class sessions. Results show that the delay is probably due to the way children learn to write.
