Title: Urban travels and social interaction: the case of the subway in Mexico City
Abstract : One of the sources of the urban experience is the urban travels and mobility. In the public transportation, multiple strategies of social interaction are shown in order to elaborate the sense of the situation and negotiate its degree of difference and surprise. The aim of the present paper is to analyze the corporal dimension of the urban everyday travel in Mexico City subway, and to understand the sense of place that emerges through the social interaction between travelers. The information was collected using focus groups, survey, content analysis of press notes and observation in the field.
Title: The memory of the citizens about the national events and characters of Mexico
Abstract : This study aims to explore the collective memory of Mexican citizens on their history through the main national characters and events. The objective is to identify the dimensions that make up the structure of the collective memory about the historical course. The study was conducted in 2009, prior to the announcement of the independence bicentenary celebration, on a sample of 1 477 citizens of four generations in the metropolitan area of Mexico City. The results reveal the presence of two major systems of thinking: one static and the other dynamic. The first is not related to generational differences, while the dynamic system stresses the differences and asserts differential attitudes.
Title: National Identity and nation: Collective memory in Mexico
Abstract : The results of this research illustrate the importance of the origins of the Mexican nation in the definition of the identity of the country and his people. Origins as founding moments of Mexico, the site of memory and the symbols are analyzed here through their joint history and collective memory. Interviewed in 2004, 2007 and 2010, thus identified the major sites of memory, symbols and myths of origin that characterize the âdimensionsâ Mexico and Mexican populations of students and administrative personnel, and analyzed from the model of âuniqueness and generalityâ proposed by Rouquette (2003). The main results show singular inductors for Mexico and Mexican character, as well as the level of generality reached in separate populations.
Title: Regional comparisons between identity and political-civic features in Mexico and Sevilla, Spain
Abstract : We report in this article research results of a project about national identity and civic-political character. These psychosocial and political categories are inferred through the variables of âsense of belongingâ and âsense of participationâ towards Nation-State institutions. A comparison was made between different Mexican regions (which are apparently less integrated to globalization) and Seville, Spain (apparently more integrated to globalization). Representative samples were drawn from main cities of the selected Mexican regions and Seville. Standardized evaluative scales that measure national identity and civic-political character were applied to citizens from these sample cities. These scales explore the perception towards twenty Nation-State institutions. These results suggest different degrees of integration to globalization that are affected both by national identity and civic-political character of the studied samples. Sevillians showed lower scores in their social representation of national identity and their civic-political character when compared to Mexicans. However, they showed higher scores than Mexicans as to the sense of participation.
